Hobbs' contract extended

The GW athletic department has extended men's basketball coach Karl Hobbs' contract with the university through 2012, a press release said Monday. Hobbs had been signed through June of 2011, but Monday's extension has secured the GW skipper for another year.

Hobbs' resumé with the Colonials boasts a 114-65 record through seven seasons with the squad and also includes three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

GW soccer squads start season with a bang

Both the GW men’s and women’s soccer teams captured tournament titles this weekend in dramatic fashion. The women’s squad took home top honors at the TD Banknorth Classic after downing Vermont in overtime, courtesy of an Erica Wright goal in the game’s 97th minute. GW goalkeeper Amie Kern was named the tournament’s defensive MVP.

The men’s squad picked up the DC College Cup title in an even more spectacular manner. Sophomore Erick Perez-Segnini blasted a low shot from 20 yards out with just three seconds remaining in the match’s second overtime, giving the Colonials a 3-2 victory over Howard. When George Mason topped American 2-1 later Sunday afternoon, the Colonials became the tournament’s champion for the first time in the seven years that the university has been participating in the Cup.

Stay with The Daily Colonial for complete season previews on both squads, to come later this week.
